by C. Ray Sondeo

Visitor medical insurance plans are necessary when you travel abroad to foreign countries where the medical expenses can really soar. Your pocket alone cannot deal with the costs of hospitalization or any other medical emergency. You cannot pay all those hefty bills and still have a stable financial situation.

Insurance assumes great importance as in case of dire need too the doctors pay no heed to your condition if you do not have insurance. There are all kinds of visitor insurance plans provided by various organizations. Each plan has its own terms and clauses which are different from the rest. So it is necessary that you select the correct plan from the various visitor medical insurance plans.

When you purchase a visitor health insurance, the money that you pay as your premium is combined with the premiums of others to form a pool of money. That money is then used to pay the medical bills of participants who need health care. Your coverage is valid only till you keep paying your premiums.

The card that accompanies the visitors insurance policy is also very important and it forms a basis for your identification, in case you need to undergo any sort of medical treatment. If you need to claim any losses, then your visitor insurance agents can help you out. They check all your losses and make the necessary payments accordingly. At times your visitor insurance policy clears your bills directly or sometimes you need to make initial payments after which the policy pays you back.

There are many factors that one needs to consider before purchasing visitors insurance, such as reliability of the company, whether it treats the people fairly and whether it pays the claims promptly, etc. Most of the visitor health insurance policies need you to cover part of your health expenses yourself. This part is known as deductible and has to be paid before company pays anything. Under some visitor medical insurance plans the deductibles are annual and have to be paid on a yearly basis whereas in some other visitor health insurance plans, deductibles have to be paid each time you have illness or injury.

Co-insurance is another important term that one must know about. Most of the times, even after paying the deductible the visitor insurance plan only pays a percentage of the medical expenses. The plan may pay 80% and you may have to pay 20%. The visitor health insurance also has certain dollar specific limits on what the insurance companies will pay for particular services.

Different kinds of policies are available and you just need to select the right one. The main types are fixed benefit and comprehensive plans. As the name suggests, the fixed benefit plans take care of only a few costs. However the comprehensive plans provide various other advantages. It also takes care of expenses in case your trip gets canceled due to valid reasons. So make sure you select a visitor medical insurance policy after proper evaluation.
