Matthew Upson could miss the rest of the season with a calf injury. The defender has played just 41 minutes for the club since signing for an initial fee of £6million.
MathewUpson sustained the injury after 30 minutes of his debut against Aston Villa in February, and then aggravated the problem on his return against Tottenham Hotspur a month ago.
It provides a problem for Alan Curbishley, who is without two other central defenders Calum Davenport has an injury to the underside of his foot and Danny Gabbidon has a groin problem.
“The biggest problem is that when Mathew Upson does get over the injury, we do not want it to go again,” Alan Curbishley said. “If Mathew did come back and break down it looks terrible and the season is over. So we are taking more time.
Mathew Upson missed four months of last season after he injured his pelvis in February. He later ruptured his Achilles tendon and only returned in November. He has previously suffered knee ligament damage and a broken leg.
“His history is that he has had two major injuries - a knee and Achilles,” Alan Curbishley said. “This injury is on the other leg. Because of our situation and being a big-money signing, he is forcing himself to get there.”
