Saltwater Aquariums - You May Need To Add Supplements

Saltwater aquariums are wonderful to own, but do need much more time spent on maintaining them, unlike the freshwater ones. There are going to be times when you need to add supplements to saltwater aquariums in order to replenish some of the essential nutrients and minerals that the tropical fish in them need to remain healthy.

However, sometimes there are saltwater aquariums where no supplements are needed as they have been properly cared for. When owning saltwater fish such as Angelfish and Clownfish, changing some of the water on a regular basis can help and also regular maintenance of the tank will further help and you may not then need to add supplements to it.

Changing some of the water regularly, but not all of it is a great way to help replenish some of those essential minerals and nutrients from it. If however, you own saltwater aquariums in which you are keeping corals (reef tanks), then it is crucial that you have some calcium supplements for yours.

Saltwater Aquariums - Determining If Supplements Are Needed

Using a kit for testing the water in saltwater aquariums is the quickest and simplest way of discovering what your tank is lacking. There are a number of different test kits available which you can either purchase at your local tropical fish shop or by going online. All of these will help you identify what is lacking from the salt water in your aquarium and the amounts you need to add.

When adding supplements to any saltwater aquariums, make sure that you do so very carefully, as an excess can cause problems and prove harmful to the marine life within the tank. To actually deal with excesses of supplements in the tank’s water, you will in fact have to take all of it out, and this can put stress on the fish, plants and coral in yours.

Kinds Of Supplements Which You May Have To Add To Saltwater Aquariums

Discussions are still ongoing about whether adding supplements to saltwater aquariums is crucial. There are many aquarists who believe that just by changing some of the water in the tank regularly, helps to replenish those essential elements which have become depleted. This is certainly the case when it comes to owning saltwater aquariums which contain tropical fish or tropical fish with live rocks. As mentioned previously, if you own a reef tank with corals in it, then you need to add a calcium supplement. Also you may find that you need to add magnesium and Kalkwasser supplements to your coral reef saltwater aquariums as well.

Adding calcium supplements to a reef saltwater aquariums actually aids the corals, algae and invertebrates living in the tanks to grow. Certainly if you don’t then you may find it far more difficult to get the chemical composition of your tank right, and which hopefully will mimic the wild environment from which the tropical fish and other marine life in the aquarium came from.

There are a number of different good quality calcium supplements which can be purchased and they come in either liquid or tablet form. These you can either get from a local aquarium supply company or from one of the many now online. Both tablets and liquid allow you to put the right amount of calcium into saltwater aquariums but the cost of the liquid, although easier to add, may be quite expensive. You may also need to add some bicarbonate or carbonate to the water in saltwater aquariums to prevent it from becoming acidic. If the level of alkalinity in saltwater aquariums falls below 2.5meg per one liter of water, then a Kalkwasser supplement will need to be introduced.
