Raising Children With the Laissez-Faire Parenting Style

by Heather Banks

Parenting is one of the biggest life decisions ever made and raising children is the second step to a life long series of changes. When choosing the right parenting style for child rearing, parents often look to their parents and to how they were raised in order to create their own parenting style. But, for some, a total deviation fro what they know and understand feels right. This deviation from the norm is at the heart of raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style.

Laissez-Faire can be associated with a “laid back” type of attitude. But, raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style does not mean sitting by and allowing your child to do what they want, when they want to. It is about stepping out of the limelight and offering knowledge to the child in order to allow them to make an educated decision on their own as opposed to deciding everything for them.

Leave bottle weaning to baby. Bottle weaning can be a tough time for both baby and parent. Instead of forcing a child to give up the suckling action hen they are not ready, raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style offers the choice to the child. A straw can be utilized as a way to get baby to stop with the bottle and pick up a new trick. Once they learn how to use the straw, they will no longer feel so stuck on the bottle.

Potty training. Potty training is another very big mountain to climb with baby. When raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style, potty training is less about making the baby sit on the potty and more about showing the baby how to use the potty. Raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style takes a more open mind about bathroom usage, but works wonders by giving the deciding choice back to the child.

Decision making. When raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style, the child is the one who will be given the choice to make all decisions. The parent, on the other hand, takes the role of educator. When a child confront the parent with a choice they must make, instead of offering advice on the decision the parent would make, educate the child on all decision and allow them to choose.

Making mistakes. We all make mistakes and raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style does not mean our children are not going to be the same. As a matter of fact, the key to raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style is to allow the children to make some mistakes and learn from those decisions.

There may be struggles and difficulties for the parent raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style. Not because of the parenting style itself, but more because of the traditional values instilled in us all throughout life. Laissez-faire does not mean lazy, it means a dedication to teaching a child through life experiences while allowing them to walk freely on their own.

Stepping back from the more traditional parenting styles and into raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style is a big step. Take each day head on and try your best to stay objective. No one said raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style was going to be easy and no one said the laid back attitude was going to benefit the parent.
