Are You New To Bonsai Gardening?

by Rick Lasslett

O.K. you worked out that Bonsai is concerned with miniature trees, even so you’ve got no idea about “Shakan - Chokkan - Moyogi”? Never fear, its not necessary to know the proper names of styles or tree types, for example Bonsai Juniper or Bonsai Japanese Maple. All you require to get under way is that you want to grow a bonsai plant as well as some basic knowledge.

To get under way in the engaging art of bonsai gardening, you will need some basic gardening skills, some elementary tools as well as supplies, a healthy dose of common sense and a touch of artistic flair.

If you have grown a few plants in containers already - and they have stayed alive, healthy as well as looking good, then you possess the necessary skills for bonsai gardening. Except for the practical methods for miniaturising the plant there really is not that much more to it!

Of course there have been volumes written about those techniques, so much so that you could fill a small library. But they are not ALL necessary to achieve an enviable result for your bonsai masterpiece.

When you first start, the job is just to keep your bonsai tree alive and at the same time looking like a tree! In this you will presumably have variable results. But don’t be depressed if you unintentionally kill a plant or two, you wont be the first or the last to have done that.

With the passing of time as well as with trial and error you will cotton on. And during the process you will feel great fullfillment at being the co-creator of such an awesome and exquisite living thing. It really can sometimes make your heart sing!

Yes there are things you need to learn. But dont try and know everything all at once, just start with the basics and take one step at a time. Begin with an easy to grow plant such as bonsai juniper. Then learn one or two things about bonsai care (watering would be preferable first up) and put those couple of things into practice until you feel comfortable that you know what to do, and then move on to the next one or two skills….and so on.

Over time you will be the one being asked for advice on growing bonsai plants.
