How Do You Recognize Male Pattern Baldness And How Do You You Treat It?

The chances of balding in men are particularly high and somewhere around half of all men will suffer from balding at some stage during their life. Balding in men is usually the result of a condition called male pattern balding. What are the signs and symptoms of male pattern baldness and what are the stages of its progression?

Male pattern baldness is inherited and means that you are much more likely to experience hair thinning in your life. The hair thinning starts gradually in men and progresses right through to total baldness in those unlucky enough to get to that stage. The first sign is a slightly receding hairline.

At the same time the sufferer may have thinning hair on the crown of his head but this is usually not noticed. As the receding hairline at the front develops it will become more noticeable and the thinning on the crown will also be noticed.

This then, in most cases of male pattern baldness, increases to the point where the baldness on the crown develops to complete baldness and the receding hairline advances to join the bald spot. Gradually complete baldness over the top of the head develops.

For many this then continues to the point where he may have total baldness on the top of his head and perhaps even continue until he has merely a horseshoe of hair around the back and sides.

This is a description of the general progression and signs of male pattern baldness. Whether whether it applies to you if you have the condition is unknown until it develops fully. Many men suffer much less from baldness than what is described or suffer from baldness in a different progression or pattern. However this is a fair description of the general process of male pattern balding.

The cause of the baldness in cases of male pattern balding is now understood. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is a male hormone slowly limits the capacity of hair follicles to absorb nutrients and the result of this is that the follicle shrinks and the hair thins and weakens and dies.

The good news is that the FDA have approved two hair loss treatments for cases of male pattern balding. Minoxidil is one of these and it is thought that this operates by increasing the flow of blood to the hair thereby increasing nutrient supply.

Using minoxidil on its own is effective but one company has taken this approach one step further to combine minoxidil with essential hair nutrients to maximise the chances of this approach working.

Finasteride which is called Propecia also works to improve hair growth however has been shown to have some side-effects in men including to limit libido.

Both products work but neither work for everyone and is important to understand that you need to use the products for at least 6 months and preferably 12 before you can decide if they are working for you.

That’s how male pattern baldness works and what you can do about it. Minoxidil when combined with a range of essential hair nutrients is an effective treatment for male pattern baldness for most men and you can find out more about this treatment on my website.
