So… you understand that Bonsai is all about miniature trees, all the same you’ve got no idea about “Shakan - Chokkan - Moyogi”? Dont worry, its not necessary to know the correct names of styles or plant species, such as Bonsai Juniper or Bonsai Japanese Maple. All you have to have to start with is a wish to grow a bonsai plant along with some entry-level expertise.
To begin in the charming art of bonsai gardening, you will need various gardening skills, a few basic tools and supplies, a smattering of common sense as well as a little creative flair.
If you have grown some plants in pots before - and have managed to keep them alive, healthy and looking good, then you already have the prerequisite skills for bonsai gardening. Apart from the actual techniques for keeping the plant compact, there really is not that much more to it!
Of course much has been written about those techniques, so much so that you could never read it all. In any case they are not ALL essential to get the result you are after for your bonsai work of art.
When you first start, the job is just to keep your bonsai tree alive and at the same time looking like a tree! In this you will presumably have variable results. But don’t be depressed if you unintentionally kill a plant or two, you wont be the first or the last to have done that.
Over time and with experimentation you will get the hang of it. Along the way you will have great fullfillment at being the co-creator of such an extraordinary and beautiful living thing. It really can lift up your heart at times!
Yes there are things you need to learn. But dont try and know everything all at once, just start with the basics and take one step at a time. Begin with an easy to grow plant such as bonsai juniper. Then learn one or two things about bonsai care (watering would be preferable first up) and put those couple of things into practice until you feel comfortable that you know what to do, and then move on to the next one or two skills….and so on.
Before you know it you will be the one others ask for advice on growing bonsai plants.
