Flowers, whether it be fresh flowers or silk flower have played an important role in our lives over the centuries; they bring happiness and warmth to any dull decorating space. However, we all know that one disadvantage of flowers that are fresh is that they don’t last very long.
Fortunately, there are many little things that you can do to lengthen the life span of the beautiful floral design your flower arrangements, floral bouquet and even wedding flowers and wedding flower bouquet. You should using proper flower care routines to keep the flowers from dying awfully fast and to even prolong their life span.
Make certain that your water and vase for the floral arrangement are clean before use. It is advised that you clean your vases using hydrogen peroxide. The vase should also be in proportion to the size and amount of flowers you will be using for the flower arrangement.
You should place the flowers in lukewarm water mixed with a floral food or preservative. Getting them into lukewarm water with floral food helps destroy bacteria in the water, which in turn can prolong the life of the flowers and it will also help the flowers open faster. Flower preservatives and floral foods are available in garden centers or supermarkets.
The stems of the flowers should be properly cut; they must never be bashed, scratched or hammered, as this may cause an infection. Use a sharp pair of cutter and cut the flower stems on an angle underwater, a slanted cut will allow better intake of water. By cutting the stems underwater, the formation of air bubbles will be prevented, which can ruin the life of your flowers.
Make certain that only the flower’s stem is under water. Do not allow leaves to be under the water level since that could cause them to rot. Also, never overcrowd the flowers; you should allow enough air to circulate between each flower.
Never place your fresh flowers in “hot spots” such as near windows, near the heaters or other heat producing objects, as the life of your flowers will be severely effected; it can promote bacteria growth and water loss. Changing the water in the container regularly is also very important; it should be changed at least every two days. If there is a need to re-cut the stem, remember to cut it underwater.
The next time you buy flowers for your home in your local flower shop or online flower delivery services or receive flowers from someone, always take a couple of minutes a day to care for them to easily double or even triple the life of your flowers. You can also visit the florist in your area and local flower shops so that you’ll be provided will additional information on how to care for the specific flower type.
