How to Remove a Charge Off From Your Credit
To remove a charge off from your credit history, you must dispute the negative mark with the credit bureaus.
You do this by sending in a dispute letter. You must send in a dispute letter to each credit bureau that reflects the charge off in your credit report.
With a dispute letter, you are disputing that the listing is accurate or valid. Reasons to dispute listings are; account is closed, information is out of date and many more.
Credit bureaus are probably not going to respond to your first dispute letter. Often they will write back and request more information about the disputed listing.
This is a result of it only costing credit bureaus money that would otherwise be profit when they conduct an investigation. This is why they are very resistant to the dispute process.
As a result it is common for people to hire a credit repair company. This is because these companies can often get the credit bureaus to follow through on the dispute process.
People have said that credit bureaus are more responsive to companies because they are scared that a company will file a complaint with the FTC regarding the bureaus violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This be true or not I suggest a company if you have many negative marks on your report.
What Is & What Does a Charge Off Mean
Charge offs happen when an account becomes delinquent and six months pass with out payment. This will allow a creditor to charge off the debt from their books.
Then the lender gets a tax break for the charged off account. It is common for lenders to then sell the account to a collection agency and the lender will create a negative mark on your credit history.
Then you will start being harassed by bill collectors. If they can not collect the debt they will sell it to another bill collector. The number of people that try and collect payment on this debt is dependent upon the size of the debt.
Each collection agency will have the authority to make a negative mark on your credit report. Thus one charged off account can easily become many negative marks on your credit.
I suggest hiring a professional if your charged off account has become more than one mark on your credit. However if you only have one negative mark then you can dispute the listing yourself, just don’t expect immediate results.
