Peyronies Disease
Peyronie’s disease can be a bit difficult to diagnose but you wouldn’t be reading this article if you didn’t strongly suspect or already know that you may have this strictly male problem. While it can affect middle-aged and older men, younger men are not immune to Peyronie’s. Genetics does seem to increase the likelihood you can get it but knowing if your dad or grandfather had this problem is not very likely due to the sensitive nature of the disease.
Doctors are not in total agreement as to the cause of Peyronie’s disease, the general consensus is that the first stages develop after an injury to the male genitals. The injury does not even have to have been severe. It is then thought that tearing of tissue along with minor internal bleeding within certain tissue layers causes scarring. Then the injured area can become worse with a thickening, plaque buildup, or a type of local fibrosis in which the tissues harden.
Did You Know? Peyronie’s is somewhat uncommon, affecting between one and three men in a hundred. I know this doesn’t make you feel any better to know that you are one of the unlucky few.
Injury to the genital area appears to be the most common culprit for how it can get started, but not all cases of Peyronie’s start with a penile injury. It does not explain why many cases develop slowly over time and with no direct injury event to point to . It also does not explain why some men that have Peyronie’s disease will see it rapidly disappear or why a similar condition called Dupuytren’s contracture that can affect the hands and feet does not seem to result from severe injury.
Duration and progress of Peyronie’s will vary greatly between men leading some doctors to suggest a cautious approach and may suggest waiting 1 or 2 years before recommending surgery. Some men that have Peyronie’s disease will seem to clear or heal after a period of time, but that can also mean having to put up with Peyronie’s for years and that can take quite a psychological toll on you.
Quick Shot Info: Of the men that will develop Peyronie’s disease, you may also be of the one in three that may also develop hardened tissues at other locations such as your hands and feet.
Peyronie’s has no boundaries on race but it does seem to be more prevalent in Caucasian males, along with the fact that some men will have no pain while others will develop mild to severe pain. Some men, although not many, will have to deal the symptom of physical erectile dysfunction and not just mental ED.
Often the worst problem a man will suffer with Peyronie’s disease is the psychological trauma. His manhood is becoming physically deformed and this can and will place great mental strain on a man and any relationship he may be in. Counseling or professional guidance of some kind is often recommended to help couples through the problems brought on by this disease.
Quick Shot Info: Peyronie’s is most likely to occur between the ages of 45 and 60. A real “mid-life crisis”.
