While proponents of Prop 102 encourage every individual to uphold and honor their own beliefs in regards to this proposition, there seems to be much confusion associated with the intentions of Prop 102. With this in mind, it is recommended that every person develop their own opinion based on the actual facts before casting a vote in November.

The sole purpose of Prop 102 is to clearly define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The proposition is not intended to deny benefits to persons or group. Over the past few months this has stirred up much confusion among many people, but it should be pointed out that by defining “marriage” as the union of one man and one woman, it does not inhibit any persons from living the way they choose. Furthermore, the purpose of Prop 102 is not to limit any individual’s benefits or rights, in fact the proposition has nothing to do with rights in any way.

Prop 102 only seeks to clearly define the word “marriage,” any other intent or implications associated with the proposition is at the fault of the assigner. The entire proposition is only 20 words long. And the entirety of Prop 102 is strictly related to the definition of marriage.

Prop 102 states: “Only the union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.” The proposition is for the sole purpose of maintaining traditional marriage and in no way seeks to limit the rights of any persons.

Another misconception about Prop 102 is that it is the same as Prop 107 which failed to pass in 2006. While the two propositions are similar, there are some absolute differences. In 2006, Prop 107 included the phrase; “No legal status for unmarried persons shall be created or recognized by this state or its political subdivisions that is similar to that of marriage.” Those who opposed the proposition considered this to be an attempt to limit the domestic partner benefits of unwed individuals. Prop 102 is different because it only seeks to define marriage as the union between a man and woman and has no ties to domestic partner benefits.

Contrary to the beliefs of many people, the supporters of Prop 102 include individuals from all cultures, religions and political sides. The idea is current that the proponents of Prop 102 are limited to conservative groups and religious enthusiasts, but the fact is advocates of the proposition can be found just about anywhere.

Prop 102 is not an issue of liberal vs. conservative or democrat vs. republican. It’s not about denying rights or benefits. It’s simply about maintaining the traditional definition of marriage. Prop 102; simple and clear.

The well educated daughter of hard working parents that did not have the benefit of high education, Michelle Obama was born in Chicago, Illinois on 17 January, 1964. Her father, Fraser Robinson, was a city water plant operator and her mother Marian a secretary. Michelle was raised in a typically normal home, along with her brother Craig, who is 16 months older. Craig is also a success story, with a history in men’s basketball - he is currently Oregon State Beavers men’s basketball coach. Michelle’s father had high morals and levels of expectations, which she has continued to carry with her to date.

While better known as the wife of Republican Candidate Senator Barack Obama, Michelle is her own success story. She appeared on a list of “25 of the World’s Most Inspiring Women” published by Essence magazine, which she followed up in 2007 with Vanity Fair magazine nominating her as one of the “World’s Ten Best Dressed People.”

Also in 2007, she entered “The Harvard 100″ ranking 58th on a list of the prior year’s most influential Harvard alumni; husband Barack was ranked fourth. She keeps good company, having made two campaign appearances with Oprah Winfrey. A recent fundraising lunch she hosted for Governor Chris Gregoire raised over $300,000 for the governor’s campaign against Dino Rossi. Michelle attended Whitney M Young Magnet High School in Chicago before going on to Princeton University, where she graduated in 1985 with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in African American studies. After Princeton, she continued her education at Harvard Law School, graduating with a law degree in 1988. After law school, Michelle worked for three years as an Associate in the field of marketing and intellectual property for law firm Sidley and Austin. There she was assigned to work with the only other African American, a summer associate from Harvard - her future husband, Barack Obama.

Leaving the corporate law world in 1991 to pursue a public service career, she became an assistant to the Mayor of Chicago, and then Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development for Chicago. Michelle Obama then served as Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, where she developed the University’s first Community Service Program.

In 2002, she began working for the University of Chicago Hospitals, first as an Executive Director for Community Affairs, and then as Vice President for Community and External Affairs. She now works this position part-time, to enable her to have more time to devote to her family.

Michelle married Barack Obama in 1992 and they now have two daughters, Malia Obama, born in 1999, and Natasha Obama born in 2001. During 1993, she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit organization that helps young adults develop skills for careers in the public sector.

During May 2007, three months after her husband declared his Presidential Candidacy, Michelle reduced her professional responsibilities by eighty percent. She has accepted the role of aspiring First Lady, and travels the country alongside Barack Obama, giving speeches and attending events. She makes sure she is not away from her daughters for too long. Michelle has been described as focused, tough, steely, and has a sharp sense of humor.

Past the point of no return, life for both Barack and Michelle Obama has now changed for ever. They will always be in the sights of blatant and shameful propagandists who, for example, paint good Christians as Muslims, and who show little regard for truth or family privacy. Secret Service protection is now a way of life, with Michelle having her own dedicated team, as they face the fears of extremist action.

Naturally competitive, intelligent, inclined not to take things for granted and with a direct, practical approach toward politics, Michelle compliments her husband well. Michelle Obama likes to keep things calm, keeping Barack focused, with his feet firmly planted on the ground. She displays a determined passion for the Barack Obama campaign and is amongst his biggest assets. However, she may also be his achilles heel; Barack seems able to shrug off criticism of himself far more easily than criticism of his wife; and, increasingly, Michelle Obama is being targeted by those that want to unsettle Barack.

I cannot stress enough the importance of how this simple and affordable innovation could impact the world for the better. We have to think from the collective mind on this issue since we all share the same planet. We must ensure a pristine environment for our children as well.
